Develop a Community

What is a Root Builder? A root builder is an opening activity that begins with presenting a scenario, question, or provocation for individual reflection, followed by a small group (2-3 members) conversation and then a whole group share out.

Effective root builders pose a question that anyone engaged in the learning session can connect with, and serves to set the tone and orientation for the experiences to come. Root builders often ask participants to reflect on personal experiences and connect them to the learning goals of the day.

Why do we use Root Builders in our work? A root builder serves three purposes in our professional learning work. They…

  • provide an opportunity for our learning community members to build meaningful relationships.

  • frame the learning we have planned.

  • create space to cultivate a culture of caring.
